Mezcalito

Calle 22, Centro, 77930 Bacalar, Q.R., Mexico

Bacalar is becoming quickly one of my favorite places in Mexico, from the local flavor to being less crowded than most of the northern Riviera Maya. Located in the Costa Maya region, it is a gem and well worth drive. There is also a restaurant scene evolving here, as more and more travelers discover Bacalar. Mezcalito is a welcome addition, sitting right on the main square, with a menu that goes a little sideways with Mexican flair and that is a good thing. The menu is inventive and delicious. Your meal feels like it was locally sourced with with pork offerings I haven't encountered in much of the Yucatan Peninsula. Meats are well cured and smoked. Pork rinds a plenty and pork belly served with a Mexican swagger. The Ribeye is tender and moist. There are other dishes we didn't try, but given the inventiveness of what we were served, I think most will be pleased with each and every dish. It's a wonderful way to spend the afternoon or evening, taking in a meal and the gorgeous views of local Bacalar life.

Ixchel

Mario Villanueva Madrid, 77930 Bacalar, Quintana Roo, Mexico

If you want to get slightly off the beaten path, Ixchel is a great place to chase the previous night away or to get fortified for the day to come. Serving breakfast and light lunch, it's a limited menu, but very well prepared. Everything here is made to order. Located just north of the square, the family style restaurant offers a cost effective breakfast or lunch for any weary or excited traveler.  The food is fresh and made seemingly from love and gratitude, the waitstaff is friendly and it feels like "la familia" when you dine here. The restaurant seating is an enclosed terrace that keeps the sun away while you dine on the delicious offerings. While the menu is not overly adventurous, it is very good and nourishing.

La Sirena

Adolfo López Mateos 332, Centro, 77930 Bacalar, Q.R., Mexico

This is street dining at it's finest. Humble and quaint, La Sirena is located just SW of the Bacalar Square by a 1/2 block. Venture here to have a seat, enjoy their wonderful preparations while taking in life. Being big empanada fans, we ordered several flavors of this menu item and each one was tasty. The guacamole was fresh and the cervezas cold. It's a great recipe for taking refuge from life and basking in everything that is Mexican life. The waitstaff was friendly and accomodating It offers a classic Mexican menu and the food is freshly prepared. The Bacalar street scene comes to life when you done curbside and for me there is nothing better, than being "where you are" with good food and drink.

La Playita

Adolfo López Mateos 332, Centro, 77930 Bacalar, Q.R., Mexico

La Playita is exactly what you came for - beautiful lake view, laid back but hip environment and good food. La Playita combines all elements wonderfully. Feels like an upscale beach club, but everyone is welcome. Visually La Playita is welcoming with dark woods, ample seating (including lounge chairs and hammocks), a lake breeze and view. It is the "hangout" and if you have the right company with you, you won't want to leave. Yes, it feels just like that. It's place to begin or end your evening. They specialize in seafood, but the menu is vast enough for everyone.  Fork to mouth, cerveza to lips, sit back and relax, if you're here, you've arrived and you just might stay awhile.
